Water reuse and runoff: two different questions about car washing

Water savings and water disposal are different

Using less fresh water and managing dirty wash water are related but separate tasks. A low-water wash can still leave residues that need appropriate handling. A facility may reclaim water while still needing a treatment and discharge plan. When comparing services, ask concrete questions instead of accepting an “eco” label as a full explanation.

What reclamation means

EPA WaterSense guidance describes systems that treat used wash water so it can be reused in suitable wash stages. Treatment needs depend on how the water will be used again. That is a technology and maintenance decision, not simply collecting any water and spraying it back onto a vehicle. The guidance does not establish that every car wash or mobile operator uses the same equipment.

Why the service site matters

Orange County publishes stormwater best-management guidance that includes vehicle-related activities. The route from a driveway or parking area to drainage is worth checking before work starts. Property permission is another question: having room for a van does not automatically mean washing is allowed. Ask the operator how the proposed location will be assessed and how wash water will be handled.

Compare claims carefully

Ask whether a number refers to fresh water, total water circulated, a particular wash cycle or an entire job. Those measures are not interchangeable.
